Notes

Cautions

The seeds of Lupinus albus contain bitter tasting toxic alkaloids mainly as lupanine (57-86% of total alkaloid). Can cause vomiting in adults with acute intoxication reported after intake of 25-46 mg/kg body weight of lupin alkaloids. In small children 11-25 mg/kg body weight may be lethal. Symptoms of intoxication include cardiac arrythmias, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, double vision, headache, salivation & prickling sensations.Toxicity is reported as being reduced by soaking seeds overnight, discarding water & changing water during cooking. Fungal toxins can invade crushed seeds and cause illness.
