Cautions
Hypericum genus has species which contain anthone derivatives, alkaloids & hypericin. Skin contact with sap or ingestion of plant can cause photosensitivity. Taken orally side-effects include gastointestinal disturbances, allergic reactions & fatigue. Should not be taken orally with serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs (e.g. fluoxetine (Prozac) ) as can cause mental confusion, hallucinations, agitation, headache, coma, shivering, sweating, fever, hypertension, tachycardia, nausea, diarrhea & tremors. May reduce the effectiveness of other drugs & contraceptive pill.
