Elaeagnus angustifolia contains alkaloids in the root, bark & aerial parts including; elaeagnin which has hypotensive actvity; harman & harmaline that inhibit monoamino oxidase (MAO) & increase serotonin & noradrenaline. Contains high levels of K, Na, P & steroidal glycosides (saponins). Should not be used in preganacy or lactation. Rich in heavy metals including Cr, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co. Pollen allergenic & can cause dermatitis on contact. May interact with cardiac, hypotensive drugs & tricyclic anti-depressants.
