Notes

Cautions

Dioscorea communis contains oxalate mainly in the fruit & should be avoided in patients with kidney/bile stones. Also contains steroidal saponines (dioscin & gracillin) & large doses may be emetic. Dioscorea genus has some species which may contain pyrridinal alkaloids (dioscorin) leading to a picrotoxin-like poisoning affecting the Central Nervous System causing seizures & respiratory paralysis in high enough doses. Not advised in pregnacy.
